Barely 24 hours after the Association of Cement Importers and Traders Alliance of the Gambia alleged that local cement bagging companies were underfilling bags and selling them as 50kg to consumers, the Gambia Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (GCCPC), responsible for consumer protection, issued a stern warning to those involved in the practice to stop such illegal activities.

The members alleged that some local bagging companies are underfilling the 50kg bags of cement they sell to the public by bagging 41-48 kg and passing them off as 50kg bags. They consider this practice to be cheating and a violation of market rules.

Acknowledging the growing concerns, the Gambia Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (GCCPC) has reassured the public of its commitment to safeguarding consumers against fraudulent market practices. The Commission’s statement received by TAT stated, “We have zero tolerance for deceptive practices that mislead consumers and distort fair competition in the industry.”

The Commission has warned all businesses involved in the cement trade sternly, urging them to comply with existing regulations, including the Consumer Protection Act 2014 and the Weights and Measures Act 1977. “We expect all companies to immediately review their practices to ensure they meet legal standards,” the statement added.

Consumers affected by the alleged practice are encouraged to lodge formal complaints to facilitate investigations. “For us to act effectively, it is essential that consumers follow due process by submitting a formal complaint,” the statement emphasized.

Once complaints are filed, the Commission, in collaboration with the Weights and Measures Bureau, will investigate the allegations and take appropriate actions to address any confirmed violations.

The issue has sparked broader concerns among consumers who feel that the current market conditions allow exploitation.

The GCCPC’s proactive stance aims to restore confidence in the market while ensuring that businesses adhere to ethical standards. The Commission assures consumers that with proper documentation, their complaints will lead to concrete action that upholds their rights and ensures fairness in the industry.
