Gambian pair Abdoulie Gassama and Aziz Ceesay have won the Golden Shoe in Ligue 1 & Ligue 2 in Senegal. Gassama becomes the second Gambian after Pa Omar Jobe to win the accolade.

Ceesay, on the other hand, won the trophy after the second attempt, which also cemented Oukam’s return to the Senegalese Ligue1. The strikers scored 27 combined goals in Ligue1 & Ligue2.

They spoke extensively to Alkamba Times Sports about their record season.

“US Ouakam is a big team; we have been in the second division for six years. This year we tried to return to the elite league. It wasn’t an easy journey, especially at the start of the season,” Ceesay told TAT Sports, adding:

“Because we were at the bottom of the table but had a great finish that saw us move to the second position. We are happy about our efforts. Teams are calling, but you look at which team is better for you at the end of the day. And every player wants to turn professional.”

“Right now, I am contracted to US Ouakam but praying for a breakthrough in Europe.”

A delighted Aziz, who scored 14 goals and four assists, says it’s more of a teamwork.

“Together with my teammates, they made me reach where I am. It was challenging. It’s the first time been a leading goal scorer, and I am happy. It opens many doors for you; everyone becomes aware of your qualities.”

Abdoulie Gassama was instrumental as he made waves in the first round. He had a great distance between himself and other contenders.

Gassama missed five league games, but his 13 goals this season were enough to crown him the Golden Shoe.

“It’s my biggest happiness. It has been in my mind (winning the Golden Boot) I have worked hard for it. It’s an honor to be the second Gambian to win the award; grateful to my teammates, and it’s something I have dreamed of. This season has been tough; we were exhausted. Every game was like a final, and we got many injuries. Now we will focus on the CAF competition and want to go far.”

CasaSports will play against l’Etoile Filante de Ouagadougou from Burkina Faso, with the winner facing Rivers United from Nigeria. The 1st leg is on August 18, 19, and 20, while the 2nd is on 25, 26, and 27.
