In a bid to uphold peace, security, and order across the nation, Inspector General of the Gambia Police Force, Seedy Muktar Touray, delivered a stern warning on Wednesday to motorists operating vehicles without proper alphanumeric code registration number plates.

These plates, issued by the GPF for vehicle identification, are mandatory for all cars on public roads.’ Vehicles found without them will be impounded, and fines will be imposed on the spot,’ the police chief warned.

IGP Touray emphasized that this directive aligns with current national laws, which have been in effect and require adherence. Acknowledging challenges in law enforcement, he admitted that the police’s execution of these regulations has been insufficient, but he committed to enhancing enforcement starting February 12, 2025.

“While I recognize that our enforcement has been somewhat lacking, from this day forward, any driver intending to enjoy their vehicle must ensure number plates are affixed,” asserted IGP Touray. He further stated that failure to comply would result in vehicle impoundment and significant fines. “This is not an appeal, but a warning,” he declared at a press conference.

IGP Touray emphasized the importance of collective support in enforcing the directive, urging all citizens and security personnel to comply. Noting that security officers often violate this regulation, he specifically called on them to adhere to the rules.

“You must have your number plates affixed at both the front and rear of your vehicles. The excuse of damaged or broken plates will no longer be tolerated,” he stated firmly.

Furthermore, IGP Touray instructed mobile traffic officers to enforce this directive diligently, ensuring full compliance from all road users.
