Following the aftermath of the tragic fire that occurred on January 9th, 2022 at 333 E 181 street, Bronx NY, The Gambian Youths Organization (GYO) immediately opened up its center for emotional support and resource distribution to the families impacted by the fire. Additionally, the Organization created a GoFundme fundraiser to financially support the families of victims and survivors of the fire.
With the outpouring of community and national support, we raised over $1 million dollars in four days. As we work to distribute the funds to impacted families and individuals, we are dedicated to making the process equitable.
To that end, we worked to develop criteria that will be used as the standard for distributing funds.  We plan to allocate a lump sum of $10,000 per deceased to the families of the 17 people who lost their lives, totaling $170,000. In addition, each household in the building will receive $5,000, totaling $565,000.
To further provide long-term inclusive support for the survivors, GYO will use the remaining $308,000, as of January 29, 2022, for unmet needs. The allocation of the remaining fund will be determined by an experienced case-worker who will assess the long-term and immediate needs of the families.
Based on the determination of the case-worker, this fund will be issued towards (but not limited to): compensating those impacted whose names are not on leasing documents, covering medical fees for those injured, helping families receive mental health services, covering educational expenses, covering expenses for any property damage, and accounting for families with larger household sizes.
To fulfill the promise made to the generous donors and well-wishers, GYO pledges to distribute 100% of the funds towards the well-being of the families impacted by the fire. We remain committed to being a hub for the future and further assistance of members of our community. We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who helped us throughout the rapid response and long-term support planning for the needs of our community. It has truly been a team effort.
Residents and families impacted by the fire will be contacted directly to be notified of their assigned pick up date which will be organized by floor.
Date of Distribution: Starting Friday, February 4th, 2022
