The Ministry of Interior has directed The Gambia Police Force to thoroughly investigate the allegations against the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (DLEAG). The accusations involve certain high-ranking officials of the agency who may have been involved in the counterfeit destruction of confiscated drugs, which includes 104 blocks of cocaine estimated to be worth D114 million.
In its press statement, the Ministry emphasized its commitment to a thorough investigation to uncover the truth and hold any individuals involved accountable.
The Ministry reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct, negligence, or conspiracy that could erode public trust in national institutions.
Additionally, the Ministry expressed its concerns regarding the seriousness of these allegations, which emerged following DLEAG’s recent destruction of prohibited drugs and substances. The investigation seeks to address these concerns and ensure transparency and accountability.
“The Public Destruction of the seized prohibited drugs is an annual exercise that is aimed at demonstrating public accountability and transparency in the handling of drugs from the point of arrest to destruction. The Ministry that is mandated to perform oversight functions and supervision of this Agency (DLEAG) has condemned in the strongest terms any actions or omissions that compromise our commitment to a drug-free Gambia.”
The statement added that ‘These allegations, if proven, undermine the integrity of our fight against drug trafficking and abuse, as well as the collective efforts to safeguard public health and national security.’
The statement says the government remains steadfast in its zero-tolerance policy for all forms of drug-related activities and any behavior that jeopardizes our national security.
“As we continue to strengthen measures to combat the drug menace, we reaffirm our unreserved commitment to protecting the well-being and safety of our citizens and residents.”
