The Gambian Armed Forces (GAF) successfully concluded the inaugural Kansala exercise, marking a significant milestone in the country’s military history. The event, which took place in Kanilai, was notable for its unprecedented scale and magnitude.
“This is the first of its kind, both in scale and magnitude, with more to come in the future,” stated Chief of Defence Staff Mamat O. Cham during the exercise’s closing ceremony.
The Kansala exercise involved 700 personnel from various state security agencies. It is part of a broader Security Sector Reform initiative to enhance professionalism within the sector.
“The exercise didn’t only test our physical health but also our mental fortitude. Each obstacle we overcame strengthened our resolve and prepared us to defend our nation confidently,” Cham emphasized.
The Gambia Armed Forces, Police Intervention Unit, Gambia Immigration Department, Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Gambia Fire and Rescue Services, and State Intelligence Services participated in the five-day exercise, strengthening national defense capabilities and upholding democratic values.
During the closing ceremony of the Kansala exercise, Interior Minister Abdoulie Sanyang, representing the Minister of Defence, outlined plans to enhance the capacity of state security forces through institutional policy work.
He emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to engaging with various security agencies and stakeholders to prioritize finalizing and validating key policy documents, including the Armed Forces Act, the Table of Organization and Equipment, and regulations on discipline.
Sanyang noted that these policy documents would support initiatives such as field training exercises and promotional exams, which are crucial to the overall Security Sector Reform of the Armed Forces.
Hamat Bah, the Minister of Lands, Religious, and Local Government Affairs, who represented President Adama Barrow, the Commander-in-Chief of the Gambia Armed Forces, reiterated the President’s dedication to establishing a sustainable and affordable housing program for security personnel.
Additionally, Chief of Defence Staff Mamat O. Cham announced an impending salary increase for GAF personnel, set to take effect in January 2025. He also reminded members of the security forces to uphold professionalism at all times.
