The Gambia’s veteran Politician and Former regional commissioner Lamin Waa Juwara has died at the age of 79 in his hometown in Brikama.

Mr. Juwara, a staunch opposition politician who led the National Congress Party under the late President Jawara was born in 1943 in Niamina Dankunku in the Gambia’s Central River Region where he started his education at the Dankunku Primary School.

Juwara later went to Armitage High School where he became head boy during his final year.

The famous politician who went on to become a teacher after completing his study at the Yundum College got his first degree in History and Masters in Contemporary History at Sofia State University, Bulgaria where Waa Jawara became the president of the African Students Union.

Lamin Waa Juwara served in multiple positions from the Ministry of Education to the Local Government Ministry, where he rose to become a regional commissioner.

Juwara served in all the five regions in The Gambia and contested several elections during the Jawara administration. He also held several top government positions under former President Jammeh.
