The Vice President of the Republic of The Gambia, Muhammed B.S Jallow, has addressed the United Nations General Assembly on the Gambia government’s commitments to consolidating democracy and various global issues.
Veep Jallow, who stepped in for President Adama Barrow, informed the assembly of the Gambia government’s commitment to promoting and investing in democracy and fundamental rights since President Barrow assumed office in 2017.
“Since our political transition in 2017, The Gambia has committed itself to consolidating democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Good governance, accountability, and institutional reforms are progressively taking root in our society. Sustaining and building the peace that we have so heavily invested in will remain a priority for the Government. We have also instituted transitional justice mechanisms that have yielded substantial results, and we are fully committed to implementing the recommendations of the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) set up in 2018,” he remarked.
Jallow further stated that West Africa faces serious problems concerning development, good governance, democracy, and fundamental human rights. He stressed that the Gambia is committed to curbing these issues by building strong institutions.
“We are now enjoying a dividend of democracy, and we believe it is the best form of governance for our people,” the VP said.
While addressing the assembly on global issues, including climate change, rampant crimes, and lack of commitment from some member states to fighting global issues, VP Jallow also called on Russia and Ukraine to end their conflict that has claimed lives and affected the global financial markets.
“Our world is also facing many challenges relating to maintaining international peace and security. In Africa, we continue to face the threat of terrorism, piracy, re-emergence of unconstitutional change of governments, civil strife, and armed conflicts across the Sahel and the Horn of Africa. The scenario is similar across parts of the Middle East.
Considering its wider global impact, the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict is another serious geopolitical concern. The institutional failures, human suffering, and a huge number of lives lost should serve as a wake-up call for all Member States.”
