Welcome back to another inspiring episode of our Women in STEM column, where we celebrate women’s remarkable achievements in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Today, we spotlight Therese Gomez Campbell, a dedicated engineer who breaks barriers and paves the way for future generations in the telecommunications industry.

Therese Gomez Campbell, a dedicated wife and mother, has carved an impressive career path in the telecommunications industry. From her early days as an NSS/IREG Engineer to her current role as the Senior Roaming and Interconnection Specialist at the Core Network Section, Therese has accumulated over a decade of valuable experience in Telecoms. She handles Voice and Data roaming for international subscribers under Comium’s network, showcasing her technical expertise in configurations, Ireg testing, and troubleshooting.

With a master’s degree in Communication Engineering from the National Chiao Tung University and a bachelor’s degree in Electronics from Chien Hsin University of Science and Technology, Therese’s educational background is impressive. Her journey began at The Gambia Technical Training Institute, where she graduated with a City and Guilds Certificate in Electronics Servicing, igniting her passion for becoming an engineer through technical courses in Electricity, Auto Mechanics, and metalwork.

During her time in Taiwan, Therese pursued her academic endeavors. She immersed herself in the Mandarin (Chinese) language and culture, participating in language courses and competitions, where she excelled and earned recognition. Despite the lack of role models in Telecommunications during her early career, Therese’s curiosity and determination led her to venture into telecommunications engineering to understand communication systems.

“I was able to learn and relate well with the natives because I believe in diversity. I even participated in the university’s foreign student Chinese competition. I was awarded a certificate for coming up with First Place,” she told The Alkamba Times.

As the Vice President of the Women in STEM Gambia initiative, Therese actively mentors and encourages girls to pursue STEM-related fields, challenging societal norms and stereotypes. She also serves as the chapter head of her alma mater, St. Peters, organizing mentorship programs and career guidance sessions for young girls. Her involvement in TECH4ALL Gambia further emphasizes her dedication to mentoring girls in STEM-related fields.

Mrs. Campbell acknowledges the challenges faced by women in male-dominated industries. Still, she remains undeterred, advocating for inclusivity and documenting her achievements to overcome systemic biases and discrimination. She addresses cultural and societal expectations, proving that women can excel in STEM careers while balancing family life. Therese’s advice to young girls emphasizes the importance of STEM in shaping the future.

“With STEM, young girls can have careers and also have a skill for multitasking. This will help them become independent and bold in their various communities,” Therese said.

A memorable moment for Therese was being the only female Engineer in a meeting room, highlighting her strength and impact as a woman in STEM. Her aspirations for inclusivity in STEM drive her to advocate for more scholarships and research centers for girls and women, envisioning a future where diversity thrives in STEM fields. Through her journey, Therese Gomez Campbell exemplifies resilience, dedication, and a passion for empowering women in STEM.

Mrs Campbell’s story is a beacon of hope and inspiration for Gambian women and girls in STEM. Her journey from a young student with a passion for technology to a senior engineer breaking barriers in the telecommunications industry is proof of the transformative power of perseverance and dedication.

As we continue to celebrate the contributions of women like Therese, let’s also commit to creating an inclusive and supportive environment where every girl and woman has the opportunity to pursue her dreams in STEM. Together, we can build a brighter future where diversity and innovation thrive hand in hand.
