The University of The Gambia Students’ Union has raised serious concerns regarding the potential strike by the UTG Faculty and Staff Association (UTGFSA) following the ‘unlawful dismissal’ of two prominent university lecturers.

In a statement released on December 1, 2024, the Union acknowledged the rights of faculty and staff to voice their concerns but emphasized the importance of ensuring that academic activities remain uninterrupted for students.

The potential strike is prompted by the recent termination of two lecturers, ongoing issues with the promotion process, and the involvement of external assessors in faculty members’ pursuit of promotions to higher academic ranks.

“As students, we deferentially understand and appreciate that UTGFSA and the UTG leadership have differing perspectives on these issues,” the Union added.

“However, it is essential for the sake of the student’s education that the semester continues as scheduled and that students are able to advance and complete their academic programs without delay.”

“The uninterrupted flow of academic activities is fundamental for the progress and future of every student at The University of The Gambia,” the statement read.

The Union highlighted that students should not suffer the consequences of conflicts between faculty and administration, as they are focused on their academic goals and future careers.

The Students’ Union calls for both parties to engage in constructive discussions to resolve the issues.

They urge an immediate halt to strike discussions to ensure that the academic calendar remains on track, allowing students to continue their studies without delays.

The Union said its dedication to promoting student welfare highlights the need for collaboration and dialogue to address the concerns of faculty and staff while protecting students’ educational experience at UTG.
