President-elect Adama Barrow during the election campaign promised to address price hikes. Now women vendors at Serekunda market are calling on the president-elect to to do so.

Speaking to Alkamba Times one Jaiteh Touray, a vegetable vendor at the Serekunda market, asked for reducing the price of rice, which she described as “expensive”.

Fatou Manneh, a resident of Sukuta Lambai, said now that they have re-elected Adama Barrow for the next five years, their wish is that he addresses the cost of living by reducing the price of basic commodities. Reducing the price of rice will make life easier for families, she added.

Fatoumatta Dunbuya, another vendor, said business is not good these days, whilst she is the bread winner of her family, and they are living in a rented house. She buys cups of rice for the family’s daily meals.

“Whatever I earn daily is what I spend to feed by family. We cannot buy a bag of rice, as the price of rice is high, as commodity prices in the market continue to increase.

“I have been a vendor in this market for the past 20 years, but the difficulties we faced in the past five years have never been experienced in the country”, she said.
