Ceesay, who was named the Auditor General in November 2022, reaffirmed his dedication to serving as the head of the National Audit Office (NAO) and strengthening The Gambia’s public financial management system.
In a statement released today, Ceesay expressed gratitude for the confidence shown by the President but emphasized his commitment to his constitutional role. “I wish to inform all concerned stakeholders that I have officially responded and respectfully declined the offer,” Ceesay said. “I remain dedicated to serving as Auditor General and diligently executing the functions conferred on me by the Constitution of The Gambia to improve the lives of citizens through public sector auditing.”
Ceesay’s decision underscores his focus on ensuring transparency and accountability in the management of public finances. As Auditor General, he is tasked with auditing and reporting on the public accounts of The Gambia, covering all public offices except his own, as well as programs and activities underlying national financial statements. The NAO, established as the Supreme Audit Institution under the Constitution, plays a critical role in supporting these efforts.
Modou Ceesay, a seasoned professional with over 11 years of experience in finance, accounting, and governance, was appointed Auditor General earlier this year, succeeding Karamba Touray. Before this role, Ceesay served as Chief Audit Executive for the Government and held senior positions, including Principal Accountant in the Financial Reporting Unit of the Accountant General’s Department and a role in the Directorate of Internal Audit at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs. His extensive background in internal audit, risk management, and business improvement has earned him a reputation for providing robust leadership in public sector governance.
In his statement, Ceesay called for collective support from stakeholders to strengthen the NAO’s efforts. “I solicit the support of all stakeholders in steering the affairs of the NAO and call for collective efforts in strengthening our public financial management system,” he said. His leadership has been pivotal in promoting the transparent and responsible use of public funds across ministries, departments, agencies, local government authorities, and donor-funded projects.
