Gambian foreign-based players weekend roundup: Abdoulie Sanyang, Basiru Badjie on target as Omar Colley wins Turkish Super Cup.

Belgium

Genk were handed their first defeat of the season following their 3-1 away defeat against OH Leuven. Gambian international Alieu Fadera maintained his spot in the starting XI and went to play the entire game.

Turkey

Besiktas put up a masterclass performance by defeating Galatasaray 5-0 at the Ataturk Olumpiyat stadium on Saturday evening. The Super Cup victory has handed the Gambian captain Omar Colley his second trophy with the Eagles.

Croatia

Abdoulie Sanyang made back-to-back appearances at the Poljud Stadium, this time scoring in his league debut against Slaven Belupo. Bamba doubled the host lead in the 37th minute. He played a one-on-one with Livaja before sending a stunner to the bottom top corner with his left foot.

 

Denmark

OB Odense’s automatic return to the SuperLiga is in full gear despite being early days. They have gott three wins and kept two clean sheets in the process. Saturday’s 2-0 win against Hvidovre sends them three points on top, with Gambian duo James Gomez and Alasana Manneh playing the entire 90 minutes. The latter already has two assists, all of which came in their game against HB Höge.

Estonia

Ebrima Jarju kept the back-to-back cleansheet for the second time this season as Paide beat Kuressaare 2-0. Sunday’s victory has taken Jarju’s clean sheet to six in the season. Muhammed Susso was handed a start and played 90 minutes while Abdoulie Ceesay came off the bench in the 46th minute.

League cup hero Ousaman Ceesay was making his second appearance in the Estonian Premier League in a narrow 1-0 defeat against FCI Levadia.

Switzerland

Defending champions Young Boys picked their first point of the season after going three games without a win. Sunday’s draw against Zuerich FC has left the defending champions rock bottom of the Swiss Super League. Ebrima Colley was handed his first start of the season after coming from the bench in the last two league matches. BSC won a freekick when Colley was fouled to get the 1-1 equaliser.

Lativa

RFS is unbeaten in nine matches that Haruna Rashid Njie has played in. The Gambia U20 midfielder was introduced in the 75th minute of the RFS 5-1 win over Metta.

Slovakia

Basirou Badjie came off the bench and scored for his Zilina II side in a 3-0 win over Samorin to pick up their first 3 points of the new Slovakian Super League 2 season on Sunday.

Friendly Matches

Brighton’s preseason winning streak continues following their 1-0 win at Loftus Road against QPR. Danny Welbeck scored from the spot after Gambian winger Yankuba Minteh was brought down. Minteh almost handed the visitor’s the lead, only for his effort to be cleared off the line by Jake Clarke-Salter. Minteh played for 74 minutes before being replaced by Ghanaian Osman.

 

Metz FC lost 3-0 at home against Serie A side Torino. Ablie Jallow played through Cheikh Tidiane Sabaly, but the Senegalase failed to hit the target immediately after the break. Ablie, who missed the scorpions world cup qualifiers in June, lasted for 83rd minutes.

Rwanda

Striker Gibril Sillah played 75 minutes and had a goal ruled offside in the 46th minute as his Tanzanian club Azam beat Rayon Sports 1-0 in Kigali to win the “Rayon Day” trophy.

The Stockholm-based Journalist is a media officer, football Scout, PR, Influencer and Digital creator. I started my journalism career as a football analyst in 2012 with Vibes FM and went on to work with CityLimit, West Coast, Hot FM, Freedom Radio, Eye Africa and Afri Radio as a content producer and presenter. In 2013, I attended Football Daily on the BBC SPORTS where we discussed the different styles of Football played in Africa.
