In a thrilling CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU A Qualifiers debut, Berewuleng FC fell 2-1 to hosts Aigles du Medina in a fiercely competitive match at Annexe Stade Abdoulab. The Gambian side, making their first-ever international appearance, showcased resilience and skill, earning admiration despite the narrow defeat.

The match began with both teams vying for control, delivering an intense, end-to-end spectacle. Aigles du Medina, leveraging the experience of their second tournament match, struck first in the 45th minute when Ndeye Awa Casset exploited a defensive error to give the hosts a 1-0 lead at halftime. Berewuleng, undaunted, regrouped and returned with renewed vigor, creating several scoring opportunities early in the second half.

However, Aigles extended their lead in the 57th minute through Aissatou Chris Ba’s clinical finish, putting Berewuleng on the ropes. The Gambian side refused to back down, and their persistence paid off in the 78th minute when Mariama Cham calmly slotted home a penalty, marking Berewuleng’s historic first goal in continental competition. Despite a late push, the equalizer eluded them, and Aigles secured the 2-1 victory.

Berewuleng’s performance was a testament to their potential, with cohesive play and tactical discipline that belied their debutant status. Head coach Fakebba Saine praised his team’s “motivation, unity, and commitment,” highlighting their ability to compete at this level. He noted that star forward Sarah Jardou, hampered by a minor injury, struggled early but improved after halftime encouragement. Saine’s absence from the touchline, due to a last-minute CAF rule change requiring an A-License instead of his B-License, added to the challenges, but he remained optimistic. “This tournament is a learning experience,” Saine said. “We’ve shown we belong here.”

Aigles du Medina, with three points from the win, solidified their position in the qualifiers. Meanwhile, Berewuleng’s spirited display sent a clear message: they are not just participants but serious contenders. As the Gambian side looks ahead to their next match, their debut performance has already won hearts and set the stage for an exciting campaign in the CAF Women’s Champions League.
