A devastating accident occurred earlier today along the Trans-Gambia Highway between Kiang Kolioro and Massembeh village, where an Iveco bus, registered BJL 8579 Y, crashed while carrying 28 passengers. The vehicle was reportedly traveling to Touba, Senegal, for the annual “Magal Touba” religious pilgrimage, a significant event for the Muslim community.

The incident, which unfolded in the early hours, left several passengers with serious injuries, though authorities have confirmed no fatalities. Emergency response teams, including two officers from the Gambia Police Force, were quick to arrive at the scene, providing immediate assistance and coordinating rescue efforts. Ambulances rushed the injured to Soma Hospital, where medical personnel treated those affected.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as the bus veered off the highway, though the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation. The swift response of the police and emergency services has been praised by the community, highlighting their critical role in mitigating the tragedy’s impact.

The Trans-Gambia Highway, a vital artery connecting rural communities, has seen similar incidents, raising concerns about road safety during high-traffic events like religious pilgrimages.

Police are urging drivers to exercise caution, especially during busy travel periods. Investigations are ongoing, and further details are expected as authorities assess the circumstances of the crash.

This comes barely 24 hours after another Fatal GTSC Bus Crash in Kalagi involving a GTSC bus, registration number KM 4845 K, near Kalagi on August 11, 2025. The bus, traveling from Bwiam to Soma, lost control, veered off the road, and resulted in two fatalities and multiple injuries.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, preliminary investigations suggest the driver lost control upon reaching Kalagi, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway. Several injured passengers were promptly transported to Kalagi Health Centre for treatment. The deceased have been identified as Yahya Mballow, 29, of Wellingara Kejew, and Oumie L Ceesay from Kudang.
