The Brikama Area Council has announced that following a directive from Governor Ousman Bojang of the West Coast Region, the Brikama Police Station has informed relocated vendors at the Brikama Magistrate Court of a potential demolition of their stalls.
Vendors were given a deadline to vacate the area by Wednesday or face demolition the following day.
In an effort to clarify the situation, council officials contacted the Brikama Police Command, which confirmed that it had received instructions from Governor Bojang earlier in the day to proceed with the demolition of all restructured stalls in the area, citing a Presidential order.
Additionally, one commissioner from the police command noted that the push for demolishment was partly influenced by pressure from higher authorities, which had labeled the command as ineffective in enforcing road clearance operations within their jurisdiction.
The developments highlight ongoing tensions regarding vendor operations and local governance in Brikama.
The Brikama Area Council has also clarified that vendor reallocation in the area was part of a consultative process involving relevant authorities.
The council emphasized that its statutory authority allows it to prohibit, regulate, or license the use of public spaces, and it exercised this authority in collaboration with enforcement agencies.
On January 14, 2025, the “Operation Clear the Road” team visited the area to assess the newly structured vendor stalls. The team confirmed to council authorities that the stalls were appropriately aligned and did not obstruct traffic flow, the Council said in an update on the issue.
In a press statement, the Brikama Area Council says it remains steadfast in opposing any actions perceived to undermine its development efforts in the West Coast Region. It asserts its dedication to fostering a cooperative environment despite challenges posed by external pressures.
