The Brikama Magistrate Court, under Principal Magistrate Anna O. Mendy, has granted a request for a post-mortem examination of Omar Badjie’s body as part of the ongoing investigation into his death in Mandinaring. This ruling marks a significant step in uncovering the facts surrounding the incident, which has sparked community concern and unrest during the weekend.
The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has welcomed the government’s pronouncement to establish a coroner’s inquest into Badjie’s death, complementing the GPF’s internal investigative panel. In a statement issued on September 29, 2025, the GPF emphasized the inquest’s role in ensuring “transparency, fairness, and accountability, free from bias or compromise.” The force pledged full cooperation, stating, “The GPF is committed to providing every necessary support to enable the inquest to reach credible conclusions, underscoring our dedication to the rule of law, respect for human rights, and the pursuit of justice without fear or favor.”
The investigation continues with a planned visit to the alleged crime scene in Mandinaring for evidence collection and scene reconstruction. The GPF’s Crime Management Unit has called for community cooperation, urging residents to allow investigators to work unhindered. GALA spokesman Omar Camara echoed this sentiment, stating, “We appeal to the youth to allow investigators to work freely at the scene. The elders have assured their safety and promised to engage the youth to maintain peace.” One eyewitness statement has already been obtained, with further inquiries ongoing to establish the circumstances of Badjie’s death.
The GPF expressed gratitude for the community’s understanding and encouraged continued calm as both the internal investigation and the independent coroner’s inquest proceed. The dual processes aim to provide clarity and justice in a case that has drawn significant attention.
Authorities are working to ensure all evidence is meticulously gathered, including through the court-ordered post-mortem, to determine the cause and context of Badjie’s death.
Community leaders and the GPF are collaborating to maintain peace in Mandinaring, with elders playing a pivotal role in fostering dialogue with the youth. The GPF reiterated its commitment to upholding justice and transparency, assuring the public that both investigative avenues will be pursued diligently to deliver answers and accountability in this tragic case.
