The Brikama Sports Committee Nawettan League Cup final at Box Baa Mini Stadium delivered high drama as Kutajunbulu FC and Kabafita FC shared the spoils in a thrilling encounter on New Year’s Day.
With a packed stadium and an electric atmosphere, both sides showed determination to claim the coveted title. The match began with intensity, but the first half ended goalless despite Kutajunbulu creating two clear opportunities with free headers.
The breakthrough came early in the second half when Kutajonbulu’s Musa Dem scored a stunning free kick in the 50th minute. His precise and powerful strike left Kabafita’s goalkeeper helpless, sending the “Pride of Sateba” fans into a frenzy.
Despite Kutajunbulu dominating possession and dictating the tempo, Kabafita’s relentless effort paid off in stoppage time. A dramatic 90+1-minute equalizer came via a scramble in the box, with a header by captain Sarjo Manneh leading to an own goal by a Kutajunbulu defender. The late goal stunned the crowd and secured a draw for Kabafita, setting the stage for a replay.
Samba Jallow, Kabafita FC Manager shared,
“It was a funny game. We came alive in the dying minutes, but that’s football. My boys lacked concentration early on, and we were naive against their set pieces. We’ll train hard for the replay and aim for a better performance. We are a team known for creating chances and scoring goals, and I believe we can deliver in the next match.”
His part, Sainey Bojang, head coach of Kutajonbulu expressed disappointment.
“I’m disappointed. We were prepared to win, and conceding in the dying minutes was a blow. This is the first time since 2016 that we’ve led and been equalized. We’ll work on our weaknesses and come back stronger. I thank our fans for their incredible support, and we’ll do our best to make them proud.”
The Brikama Sports Committee is set to announce the replay date, with both teams vowing to leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of glory.
