History made! As Brufut Zone etched their name in the annals of West Coast Region football history by clinching their first-ever zonal Super Cup trophy in a nail-biting 2-1 victory over defending champions Foni Zone at the Brikama Box Bar Mini Stadium.
The match was a masterclass in drama, with both teams creating numerous scoring opportunities. Malang Conteh broke the deadlock for Brufut in the 21st minute, only for Foni to level the score through Momodou Jaiteh just two minutes later. However, Brufut’s Omar Jarju restored their lead in the 53rd minute, giving Brufut a 2-1 advantage.
Foni pushed hard for an equalizer but Brufut’s determination and resilience paid off as they held on to secure the win.
After the match, Foni’s coach Amadou Tamba, expressed his disappointment, citing the team’s inability to hold onto their lead and the challenges of rebuilding a team. “It’s a game of football. It’s win and lose. I think Brufut had an experienced team. They made it count,” he said.
When asked about the difference between the current Foni team and previous ones, Tamba acknowledged that the team is still in a transition phase. “This team has not been together for so long, but we’ll work very hard to make sure we are up there.”
When asked about Brufut’s prospects in the league, the coach Ebrima Gaye said, “We’ll work very hard and go for the title because it’s our title and we have to give it a very respectable return.”
This historic win marks a significant milestone for Brufut Zone, and their fans are ecstatic. The team’s head coach couldn’t hide his joy, saying, “I was happy to be honest. Because football cannot go without the support of the fans and the entire community.”
The historic win earned Brufut Zone a D50,000 cash prize, while Foni Zone received D40,000 as runners-up. This milestone marks a significant achievement for Brufut Zone, and their fans are ecstatic. The team’s determination and teamwork will be put to the test in the upcoming tournament proper.
