The Child Protection Alliance (CPA) has issued a scathing condemnation after children were reportedly used in a volatile protest at the notorious Bakoteh dumpsite on Monday labeling the act “completely unacceptable” and a grave violation of child safety laws.
In a strongly worded statement, the CPA expressed being “sickened and deeply troubled” by images and reports showing minors at the forefront of demonstrations demanding improved living conditions near the toxic waste site.
“While every individual has the right to express frustrations, it is utterly reprehensible to exploit or encourage children in such protests—especially in an environment riddled with poisonous fumes, razor-sharp debris, and heavy machinery,” the alliance declared. “No child should ever be placed in harm’s way to advance any agenda.”
The group warned that the incident not only endangers young lives but blatantly contravenes Gambia’s child protection statutes and fundamental moral obligations.
CPA has demanded an immediate investigation by the Department of Social Welfare and other authorities to hold perpetrators accountable and prevent future occurrences.
It further appealed to parents, guardians, and community leaders to prioritize children’s safety, insisting: “Children belong in safe spaces—not protests or dumpsites.”
