In a ceremony filled with optimism and national pride, Corps Africa Gambia officially swore in 41 new volunteers from its G3 cohort at the Ebunja Theatre, while recognizing 23 accomplished volunteers from the G2 group who have advanced to the close of service.
The event drew a distinguished gathering of government officials, community leaders, development partners, and supporters, all celebrating the volunteers’ commitment to driving grassroots change across The Gambia. The diverse group of inductees pledged to serve in critical areas, including education, health, agriculture, and environmental sustainability, embodying the spirit of community-led development.
The close of service is the official end of the volunteer program for G2 Volunteers after a 10-month rural work term across the country. The 23 volunteers will now transition to Corps Africa Alumni and possibly extend thier service as exchange volunteers in other African countries.
Foday Bojang, Corps Africa Gambia Country Director, welcomed the volunteers with enthusiasm, underscoring their role as agents of change. “These volunteers are not just serving—they are true catalysts for sustainable development, empowering Gambians to pave their own paths to success,” he stated.
Buba Sanyang, Head of Operations at Foundation 221, paid heartfelt tribute to the outgoing volunteers for their resilience and sacrifices. “I salute these remarkable individuals who have shown resilience and made a genuine difference in the lives of others,” Sanyang said. Addressing the new inductees, he advised humility: “Remember, volunteers are not above anyone; by staying humble, you will earn the love and engagement of those you serve.”
Bintou Gassama, Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Environment, praised Corps Africa’s alignment with national priorities. She thanked stakeholders for their support and urged the outgoing volunteers to continue advocating for progress in collaboration with local leaders.
Ludimilda Dasylva, speaking for the new volunteers, expressed gratitude to the leadership and rallied her peers: “Let us enter our communities as strangers, but return as integral members of those families.” She highlighted the shared mission of collaborating, learning, and transforming lives.
Awa Dampha, representing the outgoing G2 volunteers, reflected on their achievements with gratitude toward Corps Africa staff and extended congratulations to her colleagues.
As The Gambia addresses challenges such as youth unemployment, access to clean water, and education, these volunteers will partner with local organizations to implement projects that support the national development agenda.
The ceremony pulsed with hope as oaths were taken, symbolizing a renewed commitment to service. Corps Africa, operating across the continent, continues bridging global volunteerism with local needs, promoting mutual growth.
In the weeks ahead, the G3 volunteers will be deployed to 41 rural communities after a six-week pre-training.
