In a landmark achievement for The Gambiaβs maritime sector and higher education, Dr. Lamin Jawara has successfully earned his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Maritime Affairs from the prestigious World Maritime University (WMU). Established by the United Nations in 1985, WMU is renowned globally for advancing maritime knowledge, policy, and sustainable practices.
Dr. Jawara, who serves as Director of the Ship Registry at the Gambia Maritime Administration (GMA), defended his doctoral thesis titled “Climate Emergency and Global Shipping: Charting New Governance Routes Through Analogical Reasoning” in early 2026. His research introduces innovative perspectives on governing climate-related challenges in the maritime industry, drawing analogies to address urgent environmental and governance issues. The work offers fresh insights into contemporary global problems, with practical implications for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and sustainable development initiatives worldwide.
This accomplishment marks Dr. Jawara as the first Gambian national to attain a PhD from WMU, a distinction that underscores The Gambiaβs rising influence in international maritime scholarship. As a chartered marine engineer with over 16 years of leadership experience in ports, marine operations, and strategy, Dr. Jawara has long bridged practical expertise with academic rigor. His dissertation builds on prior publications, including work on decarbonizing shipping lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Expressing profound gratitude, Dr. Jawara shared: βI feel deeply honored and humbled. Being the first Gambian to earn a PhD from the World Maritime University is not just a personal achievement but a national milestone. It reflects what is possible when opportunity, perseverance, and support come together. I hope this achievement inspires young Gambians to pursue excellence in higher education and to see themselves as contributors to global knowledge and leadership, particularly in the maritime sector.β
The milestone is widely seen as a source of national pride, highlighting The Gambiaβs potential to play a more prominent role in global maritime governance. Experts anticipate it will motivate aspiring scholars and professionals across the country to pursue advanced studies and leadership positions in this critical field.
As The Gambia continues to develop its maritime capabilities, Dr. Jawaraβs success stands as an inspiring beacon for future generations committed to innovation, sustainability, and international collaboration.
