The family of a Gambian man, Kawsu Samba, 34, brutally killed in a car dealership store in Middleton, Wisconsin, in the United States, have issued a statement speaking for the first time since his death on Monday.

Kawsu’s death has sent shockwaves across the Gambian community in the US, and friends and family have described him as an ‘honest and hardworking young man.’

Meanwhile, in a statement made available to the Alkamba Times by the family of the late Kawsu Samba, the family asked for privacy as they mourn their loss.

“It is with deep sadness that we inform the public of the untimely death of our beloved Kawsu Samba. Kawsu lived in Madison, Wisconsin, USA, and was tragically killed while at work in Middleton, Wisconsin, on Monday, March 20th, 2023. We are making arrangements to take him back to The Gambia for prayers and burial in his hometown of Jambanjelly. The funeral information will be announced later.”

The suspect, a woman in the killing, has been arrested and charged with first-degree intentional homicide, local media in Madison, Wisconsin, reported today.

“The outpouring of support and kindness humbles the family, but we kindly ask that no GoFundMe be created on Kawsu’s or the family’s behalf. We hope you can respect our privacy at this difficult time as we deal with this devastating loss,” the family said.

” We understand that many of you would like to pay respects and contribute towards Kawsu’s funeral arrangements. Please send it through Cashapp or Zelle at 262-327-4128 or 608-335-0188.”

Lawyer Sarjo Barrow, who used to live in Wisconsin and knew the late Kawsu, told Alkamba Times that Samba’s tragic death is a blow to the Gambian community and his family.

” Throughout my stay in the USA, I’m privileged to have met and interacted with many people. This young man is among those that stand out. He’s intelligent, hardworking, driven, religious, and family oriented. It’s a huge loss to the Gambian community in Wisconsin. I hope the authorities throw the book at the suspect. Further, I encourage the community to show up in court to show that Kawsu matters. Gun violence toward our community is beginning to alarm us & we must act for authorities to prioritize it now.”

According to police in Middleton, there was an altercation at the car dealership between Samba and the suspect over the purchase of a vehicle resulting in a deadly shooting.
