In a significant boost to student advocacy in The Gambia, former University of The Gambia (UTG) student leader Mr. Nyaninka Manjang has been appointed as the Country Representative for The Gambia under the Africa Regional Office of the Commonwealth Students Association (CSA).
The appointment was announced in an official letter dated November 13, 2025, from Ibrahim Abdullahi Etokonza, the Africa Regional Representative of the CSA, headquartered at Marlborough House in London. The letter highlights Manjang’s “dedication, experience, and commitment” to advancing Gambian students’ interests within the Commonwealth framework.
Manjang, a prominent figure in UTG’s student leadership, will coordinate with student bodies nationwide, support regional programs, and drive the implementation of CSA initiatives. The role aims to amplify student voices globally, aligning with the association’s motto.
This conditional appointment includes a three-month probationary period, during which Manjang’s performance, engagement, and contributions will be evaluated. Satisfactory completion will lead to formal confirmation.
In a personal statement, Manjang expressed gratitude to Etokonza and the CSA leadership for their trust and support. “This appointment, following a rigorous selection process, represents an important opportunity to contribute to student leadership and advocacy at a higher level,” he said. He reaffirmed his commitment to fostering youth participation in national and regional development, strengthening collaborations, and upholding CSA values across The Gambia and Africa.
Manjang extended thanks to colleagues, friends, and mentors for their support, pledging continued service in this new chapter.
The CSA, a network under the Commonwealth Youth Programme, promotes student engagement in education, policy, and sustainable development. Manjang’s selection underscores The Gambia’s growing role in Commonwealth youth networks.
Stakeholders in the education and youth sectors have welcomed the news, viewing it as an opportunity to address challenges such as access to quality education and student welfare. As Manjang assumes duties, expectations are high for enhanced Gambian student representation on the continental stage.
