Hart FC, a first division team based in Jara Soma, finished second-place in the first round of the GFF First Division league. This is a testament to their consistency and ability to perform against tough opponents. They’ve shown they can compete with the best in the league, and their strong performance sets them up for a successful second round.
While credit is given to the team and strikers, there’s a quiet hero behind their success: Babucarr Marena, a defender for Harts FC.
Marena’s impact in the first round was undeniable. He played six games, winning three, losing one, and drawing two. His dedication and perseverance are living proof that anything is possible in football. But his journey wasn’t paved with easy wins. It was a path marked by trials, challenges, and unwavering belief in himself.
Marena’s love for the beautiful game blossomed at a young age. He started playing at just seven years old, while attending primary school. Despite facing numerous challenges as a young player, he remained committed to honing his skills, constantly striving for improvement.
“I got into football when I was very young and said to myself that I can do it and I will never give up until I get to where I want,” Marena shared, reflecting on his early days. “I have experienced a lot of injury challenges which I can’t understand and lack of proper equipment such as football boots, often playing barefooted but I kept believing and pushing hard always saying to myself that I can do it so I will never stop going forward”. He said.
His journey was guided by the unwavering support of Coach Ousman Kujabi, who became his role model. “He keeps training me every day, he keeps motivating me on the training ground,” Marena expressed, acknowledging Kujabi’s crucial role in his development.
His journey took a significant turn when he first joined the Brikama Nawattan league in 2020-2021, where he won a trophy for his team, Sanchaba Youths.
This victory was particularly special as it marked Sanchaba’s first trophy since qualifying for the Brikama Nawattan. Marenah’s impact was further highlighted by his scoring of the first goal in the final against Manduar United.
The path to the First Division wasn’t a smooth one. Marena faced countless trials, often with disappointing results. Last year he attended trials at Jam City United but luck seemed to elude him during the final selection. However, he never lost faith in his abilities. “I always trust myself that I can do it,” he said, demonstrating the unwavering confidence that propelled him forward.
Finally his perseverance paid off this year when he earned his place in the First Division, joining Harts FC, currently second in the GFF First Division table. “I love it there and I’m happy that every member of Hart FC loves my game understanding and how I play during the game,” he said.
Marena has a great relationship with the fans: “They always want to see me play because I give it my all, and I love them as well. I’m happy to be in Jarra Soma, the place is so nice and cool, I’m glad,” he revealed.
Marena hopes to sign a professional contract and play in the top five European leagues in the future, making his country and family proud.
