Muhammed Lamin Ceesay, known as Iker, resigned as National Coordinator of the Gambia Against Looted Assets (GALA) on September 17, 2025, citing a combination of personal and organizational challenges.

In a detailed statement, Ceesay outlined the reasons for his exit, pointing to recent events that strained GALA’s operations. On September 15, 2025, four GALA members were arrested and charged, though later released on bail. Ceesay expressed concern over a flyer circulated without proper consultation, calling for a three-day protest to pressure the state for the release of the detained members. As National Coordinator, he advised against the protest, citing risks to the safety of GALA supporters and the potential for bail revocation for 23 members currently under court restrictions. He warned that further arrests could leave the organization without leadership on the ground.

Ceesay also noted legal advice urging GALA to avoid provocative actions, advice he deemed critical to prevent worsening the situation. Despite his efforts to halt the protest plans, his directives were disregarded, highlighting what he described as a “deliberate disregard of the organization’s leadership structures.”

In response, Ceesay issued a public call for supporters to avoid unsanctioned gatherings, a decision he said was made in good faith to protect GALA’s members.

“It is my responsibility to offer unemotional guidance to everyone who identifies with GALA because we owe all of them a duty of care,” Ceesay wrote. Frustrated by internal discord and committed to the movement’s integrity, he chose to step down, handing leadership to the GALA Executive Committee.

GALA issued a brief statement acknowledging Ceesay’s contributions and wishing him well. The organization emphasized its unwavering commitment to its mission, declaring, “No retreat! No surrender!” as it navigates this leadership transition. Supporters and observers are now speculating about the movement’s next steps and the potential impact of Ceesay’s exit on its momentum.

Ceesay reiterated his dedication to GALA’s cause despite stepping down. “I remain part of this struggle,” he said, expressing confidence that new leadership would carry the movement forward. He thanked supporters for their trust and comradeship during his tenure.

The resignation comes at a critical juncture for GALA, as it faces ongoing legal battles and state scrutiny. With 23 members on bail and the risk of further arrests, the organization is now balancing its activism with strategic caution.
