In a landmark move to preserve and promote their shared wrestling heritage, executives from Gambia and Senegal concluded a productive bilateral meeting with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The agreement, finalized on April 03, 2025, marks a significant step toward enhancing the traditional sport in both nations, fostering cultural exchange, and strengthening regional ties.

The meeting saw wrestling leaders from the two countries reaffirm their dedication to safeguarding the rich legacy of the sport. The MOU outlines a series of initiatives, including capacity-building programs to train wrestlers and coaches, as well as plans to organize international wrestling events. These events aim to spotlight the region’s athletic talent while deepening goodwill between Gambia and Senegal.

A key feature of the agreement is the creation of an international licensing system for wrestlers and promoters, designed to standardize practices and streamline cross-border competitions. Both nations also committed to enforcing reciprocal sanctions to ensure fair play and maintain the sport’s integrity.

Matar Saine, President of the Gambia Wrestling Association, hailed the agreement as a milestone for the sport. In a nod to the strong bonds between the two countries, Saine extended warm wishes to the people of Senegal ahead of their upcoming independence celebrations, underscoring the mutual respect that underpins this collaboration.

Senegalese Wrestling Federation President Malick Ngum echoed Saine’s enthusiasm, expressing his “heartfelt delight” at the outcome of the talks. Ngum reserved special praise for Gambian President Adama Barrow, thanking him for his steadfast support. “His Excellency’s commitment not only drives the growth of wrestling but also strengthens the ties between our nations through this cherished tradition,” Ngum said.

The agreement is widely regarded as a vital step in nurturing the region’s passion for wrestling, paving the way for future success through collaborative efforts. As Gambia and Senegal unite in this endeavor, the sport’s future looks brighter than ever.
