The Gambian authorities have issued an urgent security alert over escalating tensions and population displacement along the border with Senegal’s Casamance region, amid renewed clashes between Senegalese forces and separatist elements.
In a statement released on March 21, 2026, the National Early Warning and Response Mechanism Coordinating Centre (NCCRM) — operating under The Gambia’s Office of the Vice President — highlighted “confrontations between Senegalese armed forces and elements of the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance” (commonly known as the MFDC, a long-standing separatist group seeking independence for the southern Senegalese region).
Preliminary reports indicate that ongoing hostilities have triggered displacement from several Casamance communities, including Jokine, Kamosorr, Batendeng, Ajapineh, Kayenga, and Giffanga. Displaced individuals have reportedly crossed into Gambian host communities, including Tampoto, Kabocorr, and Sibanor. The exact number of affected people remains unconfirmed and is still being ascertained.
The NCCRM described the situation as “fluid” and said it is closely monitoring developments in collaboration with relevant stakeholders. The alert warns of potential humanitarian and protection concerns stemming from the emerging displacement and security dynamics, urging continued vigilance.
Public Advisory and Recommendations
The statement strongly advises members of the public — especially those living in or planning to travel to border communities — to avoid non-essential movement to affected areas until the situation stabilizes. Residents are urged to remain vigilant, strictly follow directives from security services, and promptly report any suspicious activities or incidents to the appropriate authorities.
Host communities receiving displaced persons are encouraged to maintain solidarity and support, while community leaders and local authorities are called upon to promote calm, discourage the spread of unverified information, and facilitate coordination with response actors as needed.
The NCCRM pledged to continue close monitoring and provide timely updates. It appealed to the public to “remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative in the interest of national security and community safety.”
The alert comes against the backdrop of recent reports of heavy bombardments, gunfire, and military operations in the border zone, which have alarmed communities in Gambia’s Foni areas (including Gifanga and Sibanor) and prompted earlier concerns from local figures about shells landing on Gambian territory. The Casamance conflict, one of Africa’s longest-running low-intensity insurgencies, has periodically spilled over the border, affecting cross-border communities despite past peace efforts.
