The Gambia is set to make history as it hosts the inaugural WAFU-A African School Football Championship (ASFC) from November 24 to 28, a groundbreaking sub-regional tournament aimed at transforming grassroots football across West Africa.
Announced at a press conference held at the Gambia Football Federation (GFF) Football House, the event will welcome over 800 participants – boys and girls from nine WAFU Zone A countries – for five days of competitive matches, educational workshops, and cultural exchange. The championship, backed by the Motsepe Foundation’s $10 million contribution, marks the first time The Gambia has hosted this prestigious CAF-sanctioned school tournament.
“This is more than a competition – we are shaping the future of our children,” declared Mr. Ebou Faye, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee and Second Vice President of the GFF. “Every boy and girl deserves the chance to shine both on the pitch and in life.”
The packed programme extends far beyond football. Alongside two days of intense matches on November 27–28 at Q-City and Gambinos venues in Mandinaba, participants will attend Community Coach Clinics, Young Reporters and Young Referees training, Safeguarding workshops, Digital Drills for under-15s, and a special Total Energies session. A vibrant grassroots festival, “Protect the Dream” youth engagement activities, and a cultural showcase celebrating Gambian hospitality will round out the week.
GFF General Secretary Lamin Jassey assured flawless organisation: “With the full backing of our President, who also leads WAFU Zone A, every detail – venues, security, medical services, and logistics – is ready. We want the world to see why The Gambia is known as the ‘Smiling Coast’.”
Representing the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MOBSE), Anna Mendy underlined government commitment: “School sport develops teamwork, leadership, and healthy living. MOBSE is proud to partner in delivering a safe, inclusive, and unforgettable championship.”
Mr. Ismaila Ceesay, President of the Schools Football Association, highlighted past Gambian successes at zonal and continental levels that brought millions in equipment and learning resources, adding that the tournament will further empower young coaches, referees, reporters, and safeguarding officers.
With teams arriving on November 24 and the official draw set for November 25, excitement is palpable. Matches and activities are open to the public, and organisers urge Gambians to come out in force.
As Mr. Faye said: “This championship is a catalyst for long-term grassroots development – building capacity, unity, and a brighter future for West African youth.” The Smiling Coast is ready to kick off a new era in African school football.
