The Gambia U-23 national team started the U-23 preliminary qualifiers with a narrow 1-nil win over their counterparts from Burkina Faso earlier this evening in Cotonou.
Hibernian forward Momodou Bojang’s (Major) 67th-minute strike from the penalty spot was enough for the young scorpions to earn an important away win in the first leg.
Former Casa Sport and now Al Hilal wing wizard Lamin Jarjue who started the game on the bench, created the penalty.
Jarjue found his way into the area as he received the ball at the edge of the box, beat his marker with his tricky skills, and was brought down by a Burkinabe defender. The referee pointed to the spot for Modou Bojang to calmly convert to separate the two sides in Cotonou.
The second and final preliminary round will be played in Marrakech, Marocco, on 27th September 2022. The winner will advance to the next stage of the qualifiers.
