Kemeseng Sanneh, popularly known as Kexx Sanneh, a prominent citizen journalist and activist, had his contract with Alport, a major logistics company managing the Gambia Ports Authority, which was terminated, allegedly due to his vocal activism against government corruption and his affiliation with Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA). The decision has sparked widespread debate about freedom of expression and the repercussions faced by those challenging systemic corruption in The Gambia.

Sanneh, a staunch supporter of the People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS), has been a leading voice in exposing alleged government malfeasance. As a member of GALA, a group dedicated to recovering assets looted from public coffers, Sanneh has consistently criticized policies and actions that he believes undermine public interest.

Alport, citing unspecified contractual violations, terminated Sanneh’s employment, but sources close to the activist claim the move was retaliatory, targeting his outspoken criticism of government practices. Sanneh’s activism includes legal challenges, such as his involvement in a 2024 Supreme Court case against amendments to the Commission of Inquiry Act, which he and the Coalition of Progressive Gambians argued granted excessive presidential pardon powers.

In response to the termination, Sanneh issued a defiant statement: “This is a clear attempt to silence me, but I will not waver. My commitment to exposing corruption and serving Gambians through GALA and my journalism remains unshaken. Alport’s decision only strengthens my resolve to fight for transparency and justice.” His words reflect his long-standing dedication to holding power accountable, as seen in his 2022 parliamentary candidacy announcement, where he emphasized serving the nation over personal gain.

The termination has raised concerns among civil society groups, who see it as an attack on free speech. The incident underscores the challenges faced by activists in The Gambia, where anti-corruption efforts often meet resistance. As Sanneh vows to continue his work, the nation watches closely, questioning the cost of speaking truth to power.
