The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has given a green light to The Gambia’s Independence Stadium, granting temporary approval for hosting international matches and igniting a wave of excitement among fans eager to see the Scorpions return home.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports confirmed the decision, marking a long-awaited milestone for Gambian football. For the first time in years, the national team will play on home soil, with a CHAN qualifier against Algeria set for May 3, 2025, at 15:00 GMT. Supporters are buzzing, with one fan declaring, “Seeing the Scorpions here will lift the whole nation.”

While the approval has sparked celebration, some fans are keeping their eyes on the bigger picture. The certification’s temporary status has prompted calls for ongoing upgrades to secure permanent CAF approval. “This is a step forward, but we need better facilities to make it last,” one supporter noted.

The return of international football to Independence Stadium is seen as more than just a sporting event. Modou Lamin Drammeh, a prominent voice in Gambian sports, urged authorities to set aside political differences and focus on transparent governance to elevate football and other sectors. “The stadium is a national hub, not just for matches but for our community’s spirit,” he said.

Ebrima Ceesay, a passionate fan, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing football’s role in Gambian culture. “Home games bring us together and fire up the players. It’s time for all stakeholders to unite and seize this chance,” he said.

Veteran footballer Ibrahim Dumbuya highlighted the emotional boost players get from home crowds. “Playing in front of family and fans gives you that extra drive. It’s a connection to our roots that fuels performance,” he explained.

As anticipation builds for the historic matchup, Gambian football stands at a crossroads. Fans hope this moment sparks a broader revival for the sport and the nation’s pride.
