Dr. Cai Guiyang, who leads the 22nd group of Chinese doctors stationed in The Gambia as part of the China Medical Team Office in Fajara, highlighted the primary goal of promoting friendly relations through healthcare services.

The team consists of nine doctors and an interpreter. Its primary focus is providing various medical services and outreach programs at the RVTH in Banjul.

Dr. Cai stated, “We are not gaining benefits here; our purpose is to strengthen friendship through support.” The team performs surgeries, donates medical supplies, and plans to expand service to Bansang General Hospital and Brikama Health Centre.

Despite challenges such as inadequate medical equipment and language barriers, Dr. Cai highlighted their commitment to collaboration with local doctors.

They have overcome language barriers by utilizing translation software when necessary and are actively working to enhance local healthcare capabilities through training opportunities in China.

In response to patients’ financial challenges, Dr. Cai emphasized the urgent need for enhanced healthcare infrastructure in Gambian hospitals. Notably, the team generously contributed medical equipment valued at over D7 million and has outlined plans for additional donations by the end of the year.

As this dedicated team continues its mission, it remains focused on delivering essential healthcare services while nurturing the enduring bond between China and The Gambia.
