The Human Rights Foundation is the latest international rights group to express strong disapproval of the President’s recent remarks directed at the leader of the UDP.
Human Rights Foundation condemns Gambian President Adama Barrow’s outrageous comments about his main political rival, Ousainou Darboe. Barrow should withdraw these unacceptable comments, which resemble those of former dictator Yahya Jammeh, under whom Darboe was jailed.
On Saturday, the Gambia’s President Adama Barrow—who is serving a second term and could stand for re-election in 2026—vowed to remain in power until the death of his main political rival, 76-year-old veteran opposition leader Ousainou Darboe.
Barrow’s remarks have drawn widespread public outrage and condemnation.
On Sunday, Gambian Information Minister Ismaila Ceesaydefended Barrow’s controversial statements as “political remarks” taken out of context. He said Barrow would not apologize and denied they were threats.
The controversy is the latest in a series of verbal attacks that Barrow has made recently against Darboe — who served as Barrow’s vice president during his first term — and his UDP party.
