It was an evening to remember at the Kerewan Samba Sira football field, as Janjangbureh edged Bansang 7-6 on penalties to claim the maiden CRR Zonal Tournament title.
The atmosphere was electric, with fans and football lovers from across the Central River Region (CRR) gathering to witness history in the making. The stakes were high, with both sides determined to etch their names as the first-ever champions of this groundbreaking tournament.
The “Island Boys” of Janjangbureh started the game with purpose, dominating the first ten minutes and pushing the “Hill Boys” of Bansang to the edge. Despite their early control, Janjangbureh couldn’t capitalize on their chances, leaving the first half deadlocked in a tense stalemate.
The second half saw both teams raise the tempo, each hunting for that elusive goal. As the clock ticked into the dying minutes, neither side relented, keeping fans on the edge of their seats. Janjangbureh maintained their composure, dictating play but failing to find the back of the net.
With the final whistle signaling the end of regulation time, the game was decided from the penalty spot. The nerve-racking shootout saw Janjangbureh emerge victorious, narrowly defeating Bansang 7-6 to lift the trophy.
For Janjangbureh’s head coach, Foday Conteh, this victory was more than just a win. “It’s emotional for me. This is my second final this year, and after losing the Third Division final in 2024, winning this means the world. I’m proud to be the first coach to bring a trophy to McCarthy Island.”
Conteh revealed his strategic masterstroke during the game: “I made five substitutions, bringing in players who are excellent at penalties. It was a calculated risk that paid off.”
On the other side, Bansang’s head coach, Habib Jallow, took defeat with grace. “We came with full force to win, but it’s football—you don’t always get what you want. The boys followed instructions and gave their best. Hard luck to us, and congratulations to Janjangbureh.”
Jallow also emphasized the potential for CRR football: “With unity, we can build a stronger team and even compete at the national level. My dream is for CRR players to shine in top European leagues.”
As the dust settles, one thing is clear: the CRR Zonal Tournament has set the stage for a new era of football in the region, with Janjangburehs historic victory leading the charge.
