The Judiciary of The Gambia has announced that the Kanifing Children’s Court and the Kanifing Industrial Tribunal will resume sittings on Monday, August 25, 2025, after a temporary suspension prompted by structural concerns at their former location.
The courts were forced to halt operations following a Notice to Vacate issued by the Central Bank of The Gambia, which cited structural defects at the Futurelec Building in Kotu rendering it unsafe for use. The Judiciary’s administrative team has since worked diligently to secure alternative accommodations, successfully relocating both courts to the newly constructed Bundung Magistrates Court Building.
In a statement released on August 18, 2025, Ebrima Jallow, Esq., Judicial Secretary, confirmed the resumption and expressed gratitude for the public’s patience during the transition. “We are pleased to inform the general public that both Courts have now been relocated to the Bundung Magistrates Court New Building, where sittings shall henceforth take place,” the statement read. The Judiciary also extended appreciation to the Solicitor General, the President of the Gambia Bar Association, and the public for their cooperation and understanding.
The relocation to the modern Bundung facility is expected to ensure safer and more efficient court operations. The Kanifing Children’s Court, which handles cases involving minors, and the Kanifing Industrial Tribunal, which addresses labor disputes, are critical components of The Gambia’s judicial system. Their return to full operation marks a significant step in maintaining access to justice for residents.
The Judiciary has urged legal practitioners and the public to take note of the new venue and prepare for the resumption of cases.
