Kumba Kuyateh’s freekick in the 34th minute stunned Malian giants AS Mande in the CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU A qualifiers.
The back to back golden boot winner struck a 30-yard freekick to earn RedScorpions their first win in the qualifiers. Kaddy Jatta was named the best player for the match.
The record title holders from the Gambia were coming from back-to-back defeats before turing over their fortunes. Kumba said Thursday’s win has rejuvenated their hopes and they will be going all out to make sure they get six points in two games.
“AS Mande is a good team with quality players and very seasonal in this competition. I am happy to score the winner; my intention was to strike well, which is why I asked Kaddy Jatta to allow me to take the setpiece, and I was praying hard to score. Been the team’s leading goal scorer, and firing blank wouldn’t tell well.” Kuyateh emphasized
“Our first two games were far better than the victory against AS Mande; we couldn’t have left empty-handed without a single point. Therefore, we are doing all we can to least go home with six points. This is our first experience, and it has helped us a lot. We came with lots of high hopes and the desire to win the trophy and qualify.”
Red Scoripions will return to action on Sunday when they face host Mogbwemo Queens. If they beat Red Scoripions and Determine Girls draw or are beaten by Eagles of Medina they will sail through.
“Mogbwemo Queens is the home team; they will have the advantage of the supporters, but we will pay less attention to that; rather, we will focus on our game. Anything can happen in football,” she added.
