The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has issued a scathing condemnation of a violent assault by a female student on a male teacher at Yunus English School in Region 2 West, describing the incident as “deplorable” and “unacceptable.”

The attack occurred during an examination session when the teacher, who was carrying out his duties professionally, was allegedly assaulted without provocation by the student. Details of the incident remain limited, but the Ministry described it as a stark example of growing intolerance and disregard for authority in some schools.

In a strongly worded press release issued today, the Ministry stated: “This unprovoked act of violence against an educator is unacceptable and unbecoming of any student.” It warned that any form of indiscipline, violence, or misconduct toward teachers, administrators, or peers “will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”

The Ministry commended the Gambia Police Force for their swift arrest of the student involved and pledged full support for law enforcement to ensure justice is served. Officials expressed hope that the case will serve as a deterrent against future incidents.

The teacher, whose identity has not been disclosed, was praised for his “honesty, integrity, and dedication” in the face of danger. The Ministry assured him and all educators nationwide that their safety remains a top priority and that measures will be strengthened to protect them.

School principals have been directed to enforce discipline firmly, with the Ministry’s full backing. Parents and guardians were urged to instill respect, honesty, and personal responsibility in their children and to discourage cheating or disruptive behavior during examinations actively.

The incident has reignited concerns about student behavior and examination malpractice in some schools, prompting renewed calls for collective action among educators, parents, and authorities to restore order and respect in the education system.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to creating safe, disciplined learning environments that promote both academic excellence and moral uprightness.
