The champions of the inter-annual Senegambia Volleyball Competition, OlympaAfrica have successfully defended their title. The crown was their third in a row following a comfortable 3-to-nil win over the Senegalese champions ASFA volleyball team on Sunday at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.
The team was fully prepared to take part in the Africa Volleyball Club Championship that was held in Tunisia earlier this month, but due to financial constraints they could not participate after conquering the Senegambia region, the organizers say.
Modou Njie, head coach of OlympaAfrica/Serrekunda said his team was fully ready for the competition.
“I told my boys that we have a point to prove in the tournament for the whole country to know that we deserve support to represent our the country in the continental biggest volleyball club championship by beating the champions of Senegal twice in the same tournament. We played against them in the group stages and the final. We also want to send a signal that we have the potentials to compete in the biggest stages as far as volleyball is concerned,” coach Njie noted.
The annual Senegambian Volleyball Championship featured 8 volleyball clubs from The Gambia and Senegal.
The championship is meant to solidify the brotherly relationship between the two countries through the organization of youth and sports activities as well as to increase the competitiveness of volleyball.
