The Champions of The Gambia Volleyball Federation national championship, the OlympicAfrica Serrekunda East volleyball team could miss the deadline to settle a registration fee of $1000 (D54,000.00) to the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) amid funding challenges.
It’s the second time the team is missing a continental championship due to inadequate funds to sponsor their trip to Tunisia.
The 3-time Gambian champions, OlympicAfrica need three million dalasi (D3, 000,000.00) to participate in their first-ever inter-club volleyball championship in Tunis.
The president of the Serrekunda East Sports Development Organization, Momodou Yusupha Cham called on authorities – both the government and private sector to come forward and support the talented young people to realize their dreams through sports.
“This is a life-changing opportunity for these young people as many teams and volleyball lovers attend this championship every year and so many youths got a breakthrough through this tournament as clubs and scouts come from all over the world to watch. If these young people perform well during the competition, they can be part of that crop and this can change the lives of so many people in the country like other sports.”
Cham noted that the registration fee is nonrefundable whether you take part in the tournament or not.
The annual continental showpiece will be held in the Tunisian capital from May 5 – 18th 2022.
