Once upon a time in the bustling streets of Wellingara, there lived a young boy named Pa Demba Badjie popularly known as Rio. From a very young age, Pa Demba was captivated by the game of football. His childhood friends played a crucial role in igniting this passion, and soon, the streets became his playground.

“It was quite interesting at that early age when I couldn’t even kick or drive a ball, but then I was exposed to friends who really liked football. That’s how I became addicted to trying to learn how to play football and started developing my skills.” He recalled.

Despite not having proper equipment or fields, Pa Demba and his friends would gather daily, kicking around a makeshift ball and dreaming of one day becoming stars.

As he grew older, Pa Demba faced numerous challenges. Playing barefoot on rough surfaces took its toll, and injuries often sidelined him. There were moments of doubt, especially when motivation waned.

“I have faced many challenges as a young footballer, including lack of motivation, which is a great challenge for many young footballers in our society, as well as injuries and discouragements that really hinder our development as young footballers.” He said.

However, he found inspiration in the stories of football legends like Rio Ferdinand of Manchester United and Omar Colley of The Gambia’s national team, who reminded him that perseverance was key. Surrounded by supportive friends and family, Pa Demba learned to push through adversity, always believing in his potential.

Rio had his best moments playing the local league “nawetan”, he played for MEDINA FC of Tallinding.

“The game against EBEH GI was my best game, and I have gained a lot of inspiration to continue from where I left off in that nawettan”.

His hard work paid off when he received a call-up to represent The Gambia under-20 team. “My proudest moment in football was when I received my first call-up to The Gambia under-20 team to represent my country. That was my proudest moment in my footballing career”.

It was a moment of immense pride, a testament to his dedication and resilience. Though he wasn’t lucky to be in the final team selection, his dreams of playing in a top league never died, Pa Demba who now plays for RS Tallinding a second division team, continued to train tirelessly, determined to turn his passion into a professional career. His journey was just beginning, and he knew that with faith and effort, the sky was the limit.

As he spoke, he emphasized the importance of self-belief. “Always believe in yourself,” he said earnestly. “Work hard towards your goals and never give up. Giving up is not part of the plan.” He wanted his fellow young footballers and upcoming ones to truly grasp the significance of perseverance and determination in achieving their dreams.

What they’re saying

“He is a disciplined athlete, always showing up on time and adhering to the team’s rules and strategies. His hard work is evident in every practice, where he pushes himself and his teammates to improve. As a team player, he understands the importance of collaboration and communication on the field, always encouraging others and putting the team’s success above his own. His winning mentality drives him to give his best in every game like our last game he scored a brilliant freekick, and his determination inspires those around him to strive for greatness as well. This combination of discipline, hard work, teamwork, and a winning attitude truly sets him apart as an exceptional player.” RS Tallinding Utd coach Ansari
