In a major early-morning security sweep, the Gambia Police Force’s Police Intervention Unit (PIU) stormed the Jinack islands in the North Bank Region on Tuesday, arresting more than 200 individuals suspected of involvement in irregular migration activities.

The operation, codenamed “Storm Watch,” commenced around 5:00 a.m. and targeted locations known to facilitate unlawful departures to Europe via dangerous sea routes. Led by the PIU Commander from Kerewan, the team conducted targeted searches and detentions at identified hotspots in the area known as “The Jinacks.”

The arrested individuals, many believed to be foreign nationals preparing for perilous boat journeys to the Canary Islands, have been transferred to the Barra General Investigation Department (GID) and Essau Model Police Station for processing. Authorities are collaborating with immigration officials to verify identities and determine involvement in migration facilitation networks.

Community support played a key role in the operation’s success. Residents from Kajata village, particularly in Jinack Nigi, assisted officers by securing areas and providing intelligence, enabling an orderly execution without reported incidents.

This raid comes amid heightened concerns over irregular migration from Gambia’s coastal regions, following a recent tragic boat capsizing near Jinack on New Year’s Eve that claimed lives and left dozens missing. The incident highlighted the risks of overcrowded vessels departing from remote areas like the Jinacks, which have emerged as transit points for migrants seeking to reach Europe.

The Gambia Police Force described “Storm Watch” as part of ongoing intelligence-led efforts to disrupt smuggling networks, prevent life-threatening voyages, and safeguard vulnerable individuals. Officials emphasized that such operations aim to protect lives while addressing the root causes of irregular migration.

Praising local cooperation, the force reiterated the importance of community partnerships in tackling the issue. The public is urged to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or via hotline 9968885.

As processing continues, authorities vow sustained action to dismantle facilitation rings and deter future attempts, underscoring a commitment to national security and humanitarian concerns.
