The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has successfully restored peace in Wellingara following two nights of violent clashes between rival gangs on September 7 and 8, 2025, underscoring their dedication to public safety and law enforcement.

Swift police action, including intensified patrols and community engagement, has alleviated tensions in the community. The once palpable fear among residents has dissipated, with no further displays of weapons observed since the disturbances. The Anti-Crime Unit has maintained a robust presence, conducting multiple operations and making several arrests linked to the unrest.

Investigations by the Brusubi Division and Anti-Crime Unit revealed that the violence stemmed from confrontations between rival groups, notably the GASA Gang and Dragon Gang. Two suspects, Haruna Jarju and Ebrima Joof, arrested on September 8, face charges of assault causing actual bodily harm and are awaiting trial. Seven additional suspects are in custody at the Anti-Crime Unit, assisting with ongoing inquiries as authorities pursue prominent gang members still at large.

Community policing efforts have played a pivotal role in stabilizing Wellingara. Community elders and youth leaders have collaborated with police, fostering vigilance and encouraging residents to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station. The GPF has praised these efforts, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in maintaining peace.

Authorities have identified the widespread abuse of drugs, including cannabis and unidentified pills, as a key driver of gang activity. Addressing this issue remains a priority in the GPF’s broader crime prevention strategy. The force is intensifying operations to dismantle criminal networks and apprehend gang leaders, ensuring long-term security in the region.

The GPF has called on parents, elders, and youth to reject gang culture and work closely with security services to safeguard their neighborhoods. “Our commitment to law and order is unwavering,” a police spokesperson said. “We urge the community to remain vigilant and report any unusual activities promptly.”

With calm restored, the GPF assures residents of Wellingara and surrounding areas that operations will continue to ensure safety and security. The collaborative efforts of law enforcement and the community signal a united front against gang violence, fostering hope for a peaceful future in Wellingara.
