The police and family are pleading for public help after the tragic death of Abdul Hydara, a 31-year-old Gambian immigrant, who was fatally shot outside a nightclub in Chamblee, Atlanta, on August 3, 2025. Chamblee police have classified Hydara as an innocent bystander caught in a violent altercation, and the investigation remains active as authorities search for those responsible.
According to police reports, Hydara was in a parking lot off Laventure Drive, waiting for his cousin inside the nightclub and meeting an acquaintance to discuss purchasing a car.
In the early morning hours, an unknown individual drove by and opened fire, striking Hydara. Authorities believe the shooting stemmed from a dispute involving patrons of an after-hours club across the street, though Hydara was not involved in the conflict.
Hydara, a devoted Muslim and a respected member of the Gambian community, was remembered as a dedicated son, brother, husband, and father of two.
His sister, Royimatou Hydara, in an interview with local media WSBTV, described him as a hardworking man with a dream to support his family. He often worked three jobs to send money back to loved ones in The Gambia. “He felt like he could take care of everybody. That’s the person he was,” she said. Family friend Banka Manneh echoed this sentiment, noting Hydara’s commitment to his community and faith.
On August 6, 2025, Hydara was laid to rest in Atlanta under a steady rainfall, with dozens from the Gambian community attending his burial and condolence service. Imam Baye Secka, who led the funeral prayers, praised Hydara as a peaceful and dedicated Muslim, praying for eternal rest.
Chamblee police are actively investigating the case but have not released new suspect details as of August 16, 2025. The department is appealing to the public for assistance, asking anyone with information to contact them directly or call Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477 or text CSGA to 738477. The family remains hopeful for a breakthrough, with Royimatou Hydara stating, “We want justice. We want them stopped before they hurt anyone else.”
The senseless killing has sparked renewed calls within Atlanta’s Gambian community to address rising gun violence, as they mourn the loss of a man described as a pillar of kindness and generosity.
