Sustain Grow International (SGI), a dynamic non-profit founded in 2024, launched its inaugural environmental initiative in Tanje, marking a significant step toward sustainable development in The Gambia. The event, a coconut tree planting exercise, symbolizes the organization’s commitment to environmental conservation, youth empowerment, and community-driven progress across Africa.

Under the leadership of Executive Director Adi Bittaye, Country Director Salima Drammeh, and Communications Coordinator Modou Lamin Touray, SGI partnered with Global Platform Gambia and Tanje Got Talent Association to bring the initiative to life. The event was bolstered by a generous donation of fifty coconut plants from Africell, a leading GSM provider celebrating its 25th anniversary in The Gambia.
The planting of coconut trees, though seemingly modest, holds profound environmental and social significance. Coconut trees enhance biodiversity, combat coastal erosion—a critical issue in The Gambia—and offer long-term economic benefits through potential harvests. The initiative also aims to inspire young people to take an active role in climate resilience and sustainable practices, fostering a sense of ownership in their communities.

“This is more than planting trees; it’s about planting hope and building a sustainable future,” said Adi Bittaye, SGI’s Executive Director. “We want to empower communities, especially the youth, to lead the charge in protecting our environment.”
The event drew enthusiastic participation from local residents, youth groups, and community leaders, who gathered in Tanje to plant the trees and discuss the importance of environmental stewardship. SGI emphasized the collaborative spirit of the initiative, expressing gratitude to Africell, Global Platform Gambia, and Tanje Got Talent Association for their support.
SGI’s leadership highlighted that this activity is just the beginning of their mission to drive green development across The Gambia and beyond. With plans to expand similar initiatives, the organization aims to address pressing environmental challenges while promoting grassroots engagement and sustainable economic opportunities.

As The Gambia faces increasing threats from climate change, including rising sea levels and deforestation, initiatives like SGI’s coconut tree planting offer a beacon of hope. By combining environmental action with community empowerment, SGI is laying the groundwork for a greener, more resilient future in Africa.
