In the quiet town of Farafenni, where business trades dominated, and STEM role models were scarce, a young Ebrima Tunkara dared to dream beyond the ordinary. Today, as a celebrated scientist at Intel Corporation in the United States, he stands as a beacon of hope and proof that Gambian talent can shine on the world stage. This week’s Gambian Trailblazers spotlight celebrates Tunkara’s remarkable journey—from humble classrooms to cutting-edge labs—driven by grit, curiosity, and an unwavering commitment to science.
Growing up in Farafenni, Tunkara faced a reality familiar to many rural Gambians: limited access to quality education and few examples of careers in science and technology. “At that time, most of the good schools and teachers were concentrated in the Greater Banjul Area, leaving students in rural communities to figure things out independently,” he told The Alkamba Times. Yet, amid a culture steeped in commerce, his passion for science took root, propelling him toward an extraordinary future.
In 2006, Tunkara enrolled at the University of The Gambia (UTG), initially set on studying medicine. But after thoughtful reflection and mentor guidance, he pivoted to a double major in Biology and Chemistry, laying the groundwork for a career in biochemistry. Undeterred by the lack of engineering programs or the perception that science degrees led only to teaching, he excelled, later returning to UTG as a Teaching Assistant. There, he inspired a new generation of students, some of whom he proudly notes are “now doing great things.”
Tunkara’s ambition soon carried him abroad to Bilkent University in Türkiye, where he pursued a master’s in Analytical and Materials Chemistry. Facing initial skepticism from professors about his readiness, he seized the chance to prove his worth under a supportive mentor. His research on Transparent Mesoporous Hydroxyapatite Thin Films—used in drug delivery and bone implants—marked the beginning of his rise as a trailblazing scientist. His Ph.D. work on solar energy efficiency, using Indium Tin Oxide and gold nanoparticles in Photovoltaic Thermal systems, further showcased his innovative spirit. “With fossil fuel depletion projected by 2060, solar energy is becoming more crucial,” he explained, emphasizing the global impact of his work.
His brilliance didn’t go unnoticed. After publishing in top journals and presenting at over a dozen international conferences, Tunkara caught Intel Corporation’s eye. Following a grueling eight-hour interview, he landed a role as a Process Engineer—a dream opportunity he vowed to maximize. At Intel, he’s since risen to process development, earning awards for breakthroughs that boost efficiency and cut costs in semiconductor production. “When I got the job offer, I knew this was a once-in-a-lifetime chance,” he said.
Beyond personal success, Tunkara’s story carries a powerful message for Africa. He champions greater investment in homegrown tech solutions, warning that the continent’s resources and digital future depend on it. “Technology is advancing rapidly, and Africa must not be left behind,” he urged, calling for more researchers to safeguard economic and data security.
Reflecting on his path, Tunkara credits his work ethic, adaptability, and leadership—honed from Farafenni to Intel—for his achievements. He offers hard-earned wisdom to Gambian youth: “Not every deserving student will get a scholarship, but that should never be a reason to give up. Stay prepared, work hard, and always be ready for your opportunity.”
A passionate mentor, Tunkara envisions a future where Gambian students gain early exposure to STEM through university partnerships and hands-on research. He also stresses the value of soft skills—communication and teamwork—alongside technical prowess as keys to thriving in tech.
As he continues innovating at Intel, Tunkara dreams of giving back to The Gambia through mentorship or STEM initiatives. From a determined student in Farafenni to a global tech pioneer, his journey is an inspiring testament to perseverance and the power of dreaming big.
