As the Refugee Council of Baden-Württemberg gears up for its spring general meeting and elections on April 12, 2025, two prominent Gambian candidates, Bakary Ceesay and Kalilu Banja, are among the top nine vying for spokesperson positions. The event, set to take place at Bürgerräume Stuttgart-West on Bebelstraße 22, 70193 Stuttgart, will see the election of new board members and spokespersons for the influential refugee advocacy group.
The Refugee Council of Baden-Württemberg plays a vital role in supporting the region’s refugee population, including over 18,000 Gambian immigrants currently residing there. The organization offers counseling, training, and comprehensive information on social and legal matters while advocating for humane refugee policies through public relations efforts and engagement with policymakers.
Bakary Ceesay, a Germany-based Gambian journalist and social justice activist, views the spokesperson role as a critical opportunity to serve as a liaison for refugees. “Disseminating valuable and authentic information to refugees is key to integration,” Ceesay said. “I look forward to advocating for more practical and human-friendly refugee policies that emphasize inclusion, participation, and welcoming all.”
Kalilu Banja, a social care worker, activist, and cultural entrepreneur also based in Germany, brings a wealth of experience to his candidacy. Having worked as a Social Care Officer for refugees and migrants in Landkreis Böblingen, Banja aims to contribute his expertise in sustainable development and youth empowerment to the council. “I’m particularly interested in integration support, humane accommodation, and the social participation of refugees,” he said. “My goal is to further the council’s valuable work based on my extensive experience in counseling and professional integration projects.”
The spring meeting promises a dynamic program, including a keynote address on hybrid identities among refugees and a “photoflash session” exploring topics such as rights, volunteering, health, deportations, criminal offenses, and residency. Attendees will have the chance to participate in expert-led discussions during in-depth sessions, with breaks for networking. The day will conclude with the members’ meeting, where elections for chairperson, vice-chairperson, and board speakers will take place.
“We are excited to present a diverse and engaging program,” a council representative said. “This year’s event will offer opportunities for learning, discussion, and connection, culminating in the election of our new leadership.”
The convention is part of the “Active for Social Participation” project, funded by the Ministry for Social Issues, Health and Integration through public state funds approved by the Baden-Württemberg parliament, with additional support from the Deutsche Postcode Lottery.
