The United Democratic Party (UDP), one of The Gambia’s major opposition parties, has issued a firm statement denouncing tribalism, xenophobia, and hate speech following the spread of an audio clip on social media.

In the statement released by the UDP Media & Communications Team, the party addressed an audio recording in which an individual—alleged to be a sympathizer of the UDP—makes derogatory remarks targeting a specific tribe. The UDP emphasized that the person in the audio did not claim membership in the party.

“We strongly condemn and completely distance ourselves from all forms of tribalism, xenophobia, and hate speech,” the statement read. “Such utterances are unacceptable, irresponsible, and fundamentally contrary to the values, principles, and long-standing tradition of the UDP.”

The party underscored its identity as a national organization committed to unity and inclusiveness. “The UDP is a national party built on unity, inclusiveness, tolerance, and respect for the dignity of all Gambians, regardless of tribe, ethnicity, religion, or background,” it affirmed. “We believe that The Gambia’s diversity is a source of strength, not division.”

The UDP called on citizens, supporters, and sympathizers to act responsibly in their public statements and to reject any narratives that promote division along tribal or ethnic lines. “The UDP remains firmly committed to promoting national cohesion, peaceful coexistence, and respect for our shared identity as one people and one nation,” the statement concluded.

This development comes amid ongoing political sensitivities in The Gambia ahead of December elections, where appeals for national unity and against divisive rhetoric have become increasingly prominent across political lines. The UDP’s swift disavowal highlights efforts to safeguard its reputation and reinforce its commitment to inclusive politics.
