The Gambia, celebrating its 60th Independence Day, has received warm congratulations from Karl-Frederick Paul, the UN Resident Coordinator.
In a statement issued on behalf of the United Nations Country Team in The Gambia, Paul congratulated His Excellency President Adama Barrow, the Government, and the Gambian people on this significant milestone.
This Diamond Jubilee commemorates six decades since The Gambia gained independence in 1965, marking the nation’s transition from colonial rule to a symbol of democratic values in West Africa. Paul highlighted the peaceful political transition in 2017, which exemplified the Gambian people’s commitment to democracy and the rule of law.
The UN Resident Coordinator acknowledged The Gambia’s achievements over the past sixty years in human development, poverty reduction, and institutional strengthening. He emphasized the country’s progress in expanding access to education, improving healthcare, and advancing gender equality, underscoring the nation’s dedication to sustainable development.
Furthermore, the UN reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with The Gambia, aligning support with the country’s development priorities articulated in the National Development Plan and the Sustainable Development Goals. Key areas for collaboration include climate resilience, youth empowerment, economic diversification, and strengthening democratic institutions.
As the Gambia enters its seventh decade of independence, the United Nations system expressed its commitment to continuing to collaborate with the Gambian Government and its people to foster a prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable future.
