Wagadu Football Club recorded a shocking 4 – 1 win over title contenders Gunjur United and move from the danger zone of the Gambia Football Federation Second Division league table.
A brace from Muhammed Kanteh and a goal from Musa Jarjue and Mamadi Badjie were enough to inspire new manager Muhammed Tunkara to his first win in his second game after his recent appointment as the coach of the Upper River Region boys.
Musa Jarjue got the Basse boys off to the perfect start twenty-seven minutes into the game after his long-range effort was mishandled by the Gunjur United custodian.
Muhammed Kanteh then make it 2 – 0 before nodding home a free header from a corner kick to make it 3 – 0 just after the break.
Gunjur then stretch up in their efforts to salvage their reputation and were caught open at the back on two occasions when Mamadi Badjie on his first return from a two-month injury, finished home cooly to make it 4 – 1 after a swift counter-attacking move.
At that moment it looks like a certain Wagadu victory even though Gunjur United caused some last-ditch threat that saw them hit the frame twice before ultimately finding a consolation through Ansu Sarr in the closing stages. This was the worst defeat Gunjur United who missed the chance to go top of the table suffered by far this season.
For Wagadu, the victory ignited their hopes of staying in the GFF Division Two as they move to 14th position with 19 points going into the second round of the league.
“We were prepared for this game and also listen to our coaches, and it’s good that we collected the vital three points. The win is sending us positively into the second round.’’ Amadou Jallow the Wagadu team captain said.
Head Coach, Muhammed Tunkara who replaces Baboucarr Coker a few weeks back, says his team will maintain their spot in the Second Division and fight for a better position.
‘’This win will now determine our season. Still, there is room for improvement. We are bringing back a lot of our players who were not with us in the first round. We have some of them coming for the first time and we will see what they bring for us, but let the fans be assured we will keep our position in the league.’’ Said Coach Tunkara.
